DISCIPLINE

HV design up to 33kV — renewables and network connections

THE OPPORTUNITY

Volantes Renewables Recruitment is partnering with a leading UK & Ireland EV charging infrastructure and grid connections contractor to appoint an experienced Tendering & Design Engineer specialising in high voltage networks up to 33kV.

You will lead the design of HV infrastructure for renewables projects and their associated network connections — producing detailed substation layouts, protection and control schemes, equipment selection and interface design, and making sure every design stands up technically, commercially and to the DNO.

This is a senior, visible role. You will work shoulder to shoulder with civil and structural teams, liaise directly with DNOs and IDNOs, and have genuine influence over how projects are won and built. Route to Chartership is supported.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the design of substations — layout planning, protection & control, earthing design and auxiliary systems.
  • Produce designs and tender submissions for connections and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Conduct technical site assessments and feasibility studies for HV network extensions and reinforcements.
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings in AutoCAD — single line diagrams, GA layouts, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Coordinate with structural and civil designers to integrate substation infrastructure and cable routes.
  • Liaise with DNOs / IDNOs and ensure designs comply with ENA, BS, IEC and relevant DNO design standards.
  • Prepare detailed bills of quantities and cost estimates alongside the estimating team.
  • Develop construction design packs incorporating in-house and third-party input for delivery teams.
  • Identify and eliminate risk across construction, operational and decommissioning phases.
  • Provide technical input at tender evaluations, client meetings and design reviews.
  • Ensure all designs meet health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practice.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree in Electrical Power Engineering, or HNC/HND with extensive HV design experience.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in 33kV or higher voltage design, including substation and HV cable design.
  • Proven experience in 33kV substation layout, protection & control, earthing design and auxiliary systems.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD for HV design drawings (SLDs, schematics, GA layouts, wiring diagrams).
  • Strong understanding of HV plant equipment — transformers, switchgear, CTs/VTs and similar.
  • Experience liaising with DNOs / IDNOs for design submissions and approvals.
  • Full UK driving licence.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience preparing and reviewing protection studies and earthing reports.
  • Experience with SCADA projects, PV schedule design or energy conversion systems.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards Chartership.
  • Familiarity with relevant electrical design software.
  • Previous experience within an ICP utility contractor or IDNO environment.

THE PACKAGE

  • Monthly car allowance — £450 per month towards your vehicle costs.
  • Hybrid & flexible working — A balance that works for you and the role.
  • 35 days annual leave — Inclusive of company shutdown days.
  • Travel & subsistence — Expenses covered when you're on the move.
  • Company performance bonus — Discretionary, linked to company success.
  • Bupa healthcare — Private cover after 6 months' service.
  • Salary sacrifice pension — 8% total contribution.
  • EV car salary sacrifice scheme — Electric vehicle through approved providers.
  • Holiday purchase scheme — Buy up to 5 extra days.
  • Enhanced family-friendly policies — Extra support when it matters most.
  • 4pm finish on Fridays — Start the weekend a little earlier.
  • On-site gym — Free access at the Bellshill office.
  • Benefits & discounts platform — Access a wide range of exclusive offers.
  • Long service awards — Celebrating milestones and loyalty.
