Purpose of the Role

You own the aircraft digital mock-up and the allocation of physical space. On a clean-sheet aircraft with distributed propulsion, a large battery installation, a medical cabin and a routing problem across composite structure, physical space is a contested resource with no natural owner. Unallocated space becomes a late clash, and late clashes are expensive.

This role holds the geometric truth of the aircraft: zonal definition, space allocation to each domain, envelope and clearance control, clash detection and resolution, and maintenance and installation access.

Role Boundaries

You own zonal and space allocation, the digital mock-up and clash resolution process. You do not design any installation, and you do not own the PLM platform or the toolchain, which sit with PLM and Engineering Tools. Where domains dispute space you arbitrate on the record and escalate unresolved conflicts to the Chief Engineer - Platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the aircraft zonal definition and space allocation to domains, including battery bay, powertrain compartments, avionics bays, cabin and routing corridors.
• Own the digital mock-up: assembly structure, configuration rules, version and baseline control, and the rules by which domains publish geometry into it.
• Own clash detection and resolution: routine clash runs, dispositioning, and arbitration between competing installations.

Purpose of the Role

You own aircraft mass and centre of gravity as controlled programme quantities. Weight growth is the classic failure mode of an eVTOL programme: the aircraft closes on paper, then gains mass through detailed design until range, payload or hover margin is gone. This role exists so that mass has an owner whose only job is to protect it.

This is deliberately a cross-domain role reporting to aircraft-level authority rather than sitting inside a domain, because every domain has an incentive to spend mass and none has an incentive to defend the total.

Role Boundaries

You own the mass and centre of gravity budget, its allocation to domains, and the reporting and control process. You do not design anything, and you do not own the aircraft energy closure, which sits with Principal Aircraft Conceptual Design and MDAO, or the substantiated performance evidence, which sits with Principal Vehicle Performance. Where those roles need mass inputs they take them from you, and where a domain exceeds its allocation you report it rather than absorbing it.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the aircraft mass and centre of gravity budget: allocation to domains and configuration items, growth allowance, margin policy and the definition of what is included at each maturity level.
• Own mass properties reporting: a controlled, auditable mass statement at agreed intervals, with the basis of every entry stated as calculated, estimated or weighed.
• Own centre of gravity control across loading cases, including EMS mission variants, patient and equipment loading and battery installation.
• Own the mass growth control process: threshold and trend monitoring, exceedance escalation and the mass review forum.
• Provide mass inputs to the aircraft closure, to performance substantiation and to structural loads, with consistent assumptions across all three.
• Own weighing programme definition for prototype and production aircraft, and the correlation between predicted and weighed mass.
• Support trade studies with credible mass sensitivity, and challenge domain mass claims on the merits.
• Report mass status to the programme honestly, including when the trend is adverse and its consequence for range, payload or hover margin.

• 10+ years in mass properties, structures or aircraft performance engineering, including at least four owning or maintaining an aircraft mass and centre of gravity budget.
• Personal ownership of a controlled mass statement on a development aircraft programme, through at least one major design maturity gate.
• Mass growth control in practice: allocation, monitoring, exceedance handling and the organisational discipline it requires.
• Centre of gravity control across loading and mission variants.
• Weighing programme experience and correlation of predicted against measured mass.
• Credible experience defending a budget against cross-domain pressure.

Purpose of the Role

You own aircraft fire protection and detection as an installed system: detection loops and sensing, extinguishing or suppression provision, discharge and distribution, and crew annunciation, across the cabin, EMS bay, equipment bays and powertrain compartments.

This role was previously combined with battery thermal runaway under the propulsion domain. That combination has been separated. Battery cell runaway propagation, containment and venting are integral to pack design and now sit with Principal Battery Systems and Qualification. You own everything else, and critically you own the aircraft-level detection and annunciation architecture into which the battery installation reports.

The interface with the battery domain is the important part of this role. A battery thermal event is the design case that fire protection exists to survive, but the containment is designed by the battery domain and the aircraft response is designed by you. Neither works without the other.

Role Boundaries

You own aircraft fire detection, protection and suppression outside the battery pack. Cell runaway containment, venting and propagation resistance inside the pack belong to the Battery domain and are not yours; you own the requirements you place on them for detection and for the aircraft fire path, and the annunciation and response once an event is detected. Battery-bay structural fire path is jointly owned with Structures. Cabin thermal and environmental control sit with Principal Cabin and ECS.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the aircraft fire detection architecture: zone definition, detection technology and placement, detection latency and false-alarm performance, and the annunciation set presented to the crew.
• Own fire protection and suppression provision by zone: agent selection where applicable, distribution and discharge, and the effectiveness case for each protected zone.
• Own the aircraft response to a battery thermal event: detection, annunciation, crew procedure inputs, and the containment of consequences outside the pack, agreed with the Battery domain.
• Own the fire protection contribution to the aircraft safety assessment, including failure condition classification for undetected fire and for false discharge.
• Own flammability and fire-resistance requirements on materials and installations, working with Structures, Cabin and ECS and the EMS mission installation.
• Own the fire protection requirements placed on adjacent domains: battery bay detection provision, powertrain compartment detection, and structural fire path and barrier requirements.
• Own the certification content for fire protection and detection, including the test and analysis evidence required.
• Define and interpret fire detection and suppression test, including battery event scenarios agreed with the Battery domain.

Required Experience: Must Have

• 10+ years in aircraft fire protection, mechanical systems or safety equipment engineering, including at least four on aircraft fire detection or suppression on a certified or equivalent programme.
• Personal ownership of an aircraft fire detection or suppression system design, including zone definition and detection performance.
• Flammability and fire-resistance requirements applied to materials and installations.
• Fire protection certification content: the analysis and test evidence required and its acceptance.
• Safety assessment contribution for fire hazards, including undetected fire and false discharge cases.
• Working across domain boundaries where the hazard originates in someone else design.

• Lithium battery fire and thermal runaway response at aircraft level, as distinct from pack-level containment.
• Electric or hybrid-electric aircraft fire protection, where the hazard set differs from a fuel-based aircraft.

Purpose of the Role

You build and run the propulsion organisation and deliver its work. The domain has to produce a powertrain that meets a demanding one-drive-inoperative case, prove it on rigs before it flies, and do it with suppliers who are more mature than your own team will be for the first year. Your job is to make that happen on the dates the programme has committed to.

Through Phase 1 this is also a hands-on engineering role: with a small team you will be the powertrain architect as well as the domain lead. A candidate looking to stop doing engineering is the wrong candidate for this seat.

You are paired with the Chief Engineer - Propulsion. The Chief Engineer decides what is technically acceptable; you decide how it is delivered. The pairing only works as a partnership, not a negotiation.

Role Boundaries

You hold delivery and line authority, not technical authority. You own the plan, the team, the cost, the facilities and supplier delivery performance. You do not approve the propulsion architecture and you do not sign gate artefacts. Where delivery pressure and technical acceptability collide, bring the conflict with options and their cost to the Chief Engineer - Platform and the Head of Engineering jointly rather than absorbing the risk quietly.

Key Responsibilities

• Build the domain: define the team shape with the Chief Engineer, recruit the Principals and Senior specialists, and develop them. Recruitment in electric drives and propulsor aeromechanics is a first-order responsibility, not an HR process you participate in.
• Own the domain delivery plan: scope, sequence, estimate and resource propulsion work from concept through rig test, and integrate it into the programme schedule.
• Stand up powertrain test capability: dynamometer and drive test, iron-bird contribution, propulsor test provision, instrumentation and the safety case for high-power rotating and high-voltage test.
• Act as powertrain architect through Phase 1: size drives, run and challenge design work, and stay close enough to the engineering to know when a plan is optimistic.
• Manage supplier delivery for motors, inverters and propulsors: technical requirements into procurement, supplier technical performance and recovery, and staged long-lead commitments.
• Own the domain cost: budget, estimates, capital for test facilities, and the recurring cost consequences of design choices.
• Deliver the domain commitments to other domains on time: the flight-control interface, power and thermal demands to Battery and Electrical, mount and pylon loads to Structures, and installation data to Industrialisation.
• Own safe execution in test and build areas: competence and training for high-voltage and high-energy rotating equipment work.
• Report delivery status honestly in programme reviews, including when it is bad, and escalate slippage while it can still be recovered.

• 12+ years in propulsion, electric drives or powertrain engineering, of which at least five on airborne or equivalent safety-critical applications.
• Delivered a propulsion or powertrain development through to real hardware and a completed rig or ground test campaign, accountable for plan and schedule.
• Line management of a technical team including recruiting into it; you have hired engineers yourself.
• Stood up or materially expanded powertrain or drive test capability, including facilities, instrumentation and the safety case behind them.

Purpose of the Role

You build and run the electrical organisation and deliver its work. Electrical is the domain whose workload grows fastest after preliminary design: the wiring interconnection system alone becomes one of the largest engineering and manufacturing data sets on the aircraft, and it is entirely dependent on every other domain having settled its installations.

Volantes Renewables Recruitment is partnering with a leading UK & Ireland EV charging infrastructure and grid connections contractor to appoint an experienced Tendering & Design Engineer specialising in high voltage networks up to 33kV.

You will lead the design of HV infrastructure for renewables projects and their associated network connections — producing detailed substation layouts, protection and control schemes, equipment selection and interface design, and making sure every design stands up technically, commercially and to the DNO.
