Job Description

Contract  |  UK-Based

Volantes Technical Recruitment is working on behalf of an organisation operating Special Mission Aircraft platforms to find a specialist RF/Spectrum Interference Technical Analyst to deliver a critical technical assessment on radio interference effects and controls.

This is a highly specialist consultancy-style contract assignment, ideal for a senior RF/EMC professional with deep expertise in aeronautical spectrum protection and safety-of-life radiocommunication systems.

The Role

You will provide a detailed technical analysis and assessment of the radio interference effects and controls associated with Special Mission Aircraft systems. This includes:

  • Undertaking a comprehensive assessment of the potential impact of unintended emissions, spurious emissions, and out-of-band transmissions on safety-of-life radiocommunication services.
  • Overseeing ground measurements, analysis and presentation of measured RF emissions data from relevant aircraft systems, performed at a UK location where free space transmissions are permitted.
  • Giving particular consideration to the protection of spectrum allocated to the Aeronautical Mobile (R) Service and Aeronautical Radionavigation Service, where harmful interference could carry adverse safety consequences.
  • Assessing potential effects on civil CNS/ATM systems, including both airborne and ground-based installations operating in protected aeronautical spectrum bands.
  • Extending assessment to other internationally recognised safety-of-life systems, including maritime search and rescue services under GMDSS, maritime radionavigation services, and related space/terrestrial systems identified in the ITU Radio Regulations as requiring special protection.
  • Demonstrating, through technical analysis and mitigation measures, that proposed operations will not cause harmful interference to protected services, consistent with ITU Radio Regulations and relevant ITU-R Recommendations.
  • Assessing and mitigating unintended transmission risk across the full possible transmission range of the mission system.

About You

  • Professional Engineer / Technical Specialist with 10+ years' proven experience in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Strong familiarity with aircraft navigation and communication systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of radar and radio communication system design, and transmitter/receiver performance.
  • Detailed knowledge of RF spectrum, RF propagation, and free space loss effects.
  • Detailed knowledge of RF budgets.
  • Familiarity with UK and international standards on RF spectrum and interference controls/regulations.
  • CEng or equivalent professional qualification.

Reporting Line

This role reports into the Chief Engineer (Technology) function, with a dotted line to the Deputy Chief Engineer (Technology).

Location

UK-based — ground measurement activity will be conducted at a UK site where free space transmissions are permitted.
