Volantes Technical Recruitment, on behalf of our Glasgow based Rotary client have the permanent role of HSE Manager available


Company Overview

Our client offers a wide range of helicopter services to utility and private clients. Services include commercial air transport; external load operations; airborne data acquisition; aerial filming; aerial survey.

The company employs ninety staff distributed between operating bases at Inverness, Cumbernauld and Birmingham operates and maintains a fleet of 17 aircraft of several types.

CAA AOC, SPO, Part 145, Part MG and Part CAMO Airworthiness Approvals are held or in current application.

Comprehensive Safety and Environmental Management Systems are in place. ISO 45001 and 14001 certification is held.


The Role

The HSE Manager (HSEM), as part of the Safety Team, supports the Compliance Monitoring and Safety Manager (CMSM) and the Safety Director with the development, administration and application of processes and work systems that improve health, safety and environmental performance across the entire range of company activities. They are assisted in this role by the Safety & Compliance-Coordinator.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Development, maintenance, and revision of the Safety and Environmental Management Systems; organisation of the Safety Committee, Safety Action Group (SAG), Safety Review Group (SRG), supporting the Safety Review Board (SRB) and maintaining an appropriate register of legal requirements and compliance
  • Providing expert advice and assistance on HSE matters to the group management
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as required by legislation; liaising with the Competent Authorities with respect to mandatory and discretionary reports
  • Providing feedback about ongoing safety issues, coaching and training managers and colleagues on safe working practices, distributing relevant and up-to-date safety information to colleagues, identifying safety training requirements; development and delivery of health, safety, environmental and wellbeing training to new and current colleagues
  • Represent the company at external audits. Conducting Site audits and identify potential improvements.
  • Initiation and follow-up of internal occurrence investigations and accident investigation, reduction of risk of reoccurrence, lead the Risk Assessment process and ensure safe systems of work are adhered to
  • Develop policies, processes and procedures to adhere to statutory regulations
  • Promote Health, Safety, Environmental, Wellbeing awareness and company Just Culture
  • Promote opportunities to use resources more efficiently and promote energy saving initiatives


  • Relevant experience in a HSE focused environment
  • Thorough understanding of appropriate Regulations, Risk Management, Risk Assessment and Root Cause Analysis
  • Working knowledge of ISO accreditations
  • Ability to analyse information and author concise reports
  • Able to prioritise and organise workflow
  • Able to educate, persuade, influence and communicate at all levels
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Diplomacy, integrity and discretion
  • Presentational / Training experience
  • Understanding of Human Factors principles
  • Understanding of Aviation Safety & HSE Management Systems
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry developments and statutory requirements

Required Qualifications

  • NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent
  • ICAO/EASA/CAA Safety Management Systems Training (desirable)
  • Full UK/EU driving licence
  • Right to reside and work in the UK
  • Environmental Qualification (desirable)
  • Auditor for ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 (desirable)

Other Job Requirements

  • Flexible attitude to working hours
  • This role will include travel to all company bases and occasional travel to client or supplier’s sites

Salary and benefits

Salary is negotiable depending on experience and is based on a 35-hour working week, Monday to Friday routine, with occasional requirements at weekends. Benefits are in accordance with the clients standard terms.
